How long do smash repairs actually take?
Nobody can honestly give you a number before the car has been assessed. What determines it is not the size of the dent but the queue in front of it: getting an assessment, getting approval, getting parts, and getting the safety systems recalibrated afterwards.
The four things that actually set the timeline
A repair is a sequence, and each step has its own delay attached. Understanding which one your car is stuck at tells you far more than a general estimate.
- Assessment. An assessor has to inspect the damage and agree what will be done. This is a booking, and bookings queue.
- Approval. The insurer signs off the scope and cost. Straightforward jobs go through quickly; anything unusual gets queried.
- Parts. The single biggest variable. A common panel may be on a shelf. A part for a European model, or one on national backorder, can add weeks on its own.
- The work itself, plus recalibration of cameras, radar and sensors afterwards, which cannot be skipped on a modern car.
If your repair has stalled, ask which of these four it is sitting at. It is a much more useful question than asking when the car will be ready.
Why the estimate changes once the car is apart
Bumpers are designed to absorb impact and hide what happened behind them. It is common for a car that looked like a bumper and a headlight to reveal a bent crash bar, a cracked mounting or a damaged radiator support once it is stripped.
When that happens the scope has to be resubmitted to the insurer and approved again, and more parts have to be ordered. This is the most frequent reason a repair that was quoted at a week becomes three.
What a modern car adds
Cars now carry cameras behind the windscreen, radar in the bumpers and sensors through the panels. Anything that moves them, including a bumper being removed and refitted, means the systems have to be recalibrated to manufacturer specification afterwards.
That is a real step with real time attached, and it is not optional. Lane keeping and autonomous braking rely on those sensors being aimed correctly.
What you can do to shorten it
Most of the timeline is outside your control. These are the parts that are not.
- Get the car assessed early rather than waiting for the insurer to come back to you.
- Provide the other driver's details and your claim number promptly, since approval cannot start without them.
- Answer calls from the assessor or repairer the same day. A missed call can cost a day at every step.
- Do not move the car between repairers mid-claim unless there is a real reason. It restarts the queue.
What good communication looks like
You should not have to chase anyone to find out what is happening to your car. A repairer who is confident about the work will tell you what stage it is at, what it is waiting on, and what the current expected date is, and will contact you when that date moves rather than when you ring.
Photographs during the repair are the simplest form of this. They also give you a record of what was done.
Common questions
Why does my repairer not just give me a date?
Because until the car is stripped and the parts are confirmed available, any date is a guess. A repairer who commits to a date before assessment is either very confident about the damage or is telling you what you want to hear.
Can I keep driving while I wait for parts?
If the car is roadworthy and safe, often yes, and a good repairer will book you in for when the parts land rather than holding the car. Ask.
Who decides whether my car is repaired or written off?
The insurer, based on the assessment. Broadly, if repairing it costs more than the car is worth, it is written off. You can question the valuation if you think it is low.
Do I get a hire car for the whole time?
In a not-at-fault claim, generally for as long as your car is genuinely off the road, including the waiting. If you caused the accident, it depends on your policy.
